Accelerated BSN Help

Hello current BSN students,

I am looking for some insight into how you all got accepted into your respective accelerated BSN programs. I am currently taking an online biology course to get started on my prerequisites. I am looking at Stony Brook, Molloy and Adelphi although they all have different requirements. I am open to other schools on Long Island, as well, if anyone has any suggestions about those. My biggest fear is my GPA from my undgraduate school which was a 2.94. I received a B.S. in accounting in 2009. I currently work as an accountant and have been for the past 2.5 years so taking the prerequisite classes is proving to be difficult but I am very motivated and excited to change careers! Thank you all for your help, it is much appreciated!

Can only offer general advice to your situation but I'd look for programs that give great leeway with your previous college work. While a 2.94 (just a hair below a "B" average) isn't that bad in the grad scheme of things, you'll probably be up against those with 3.5 to 4.0 averages. You really need to ace your pre-reqs both to bring up your GPA and to prove you are able to handle the course work for a ABSN program. Molloy for instance requires ABSN students to maintain a 3.0 GPA for retention.

The other thing is that if you are going to work while attending nursing school speak with someone in the program or programs of your choice and former/current students. Many programs do not want to hear any reasons why you missed this or that class and or otherwise cannot do assigned work and keep up your GPA. This often means if you cannot devote full time and effort to the program don't look for sympathy if your grades suffer.

A quick look at Adelphi's "PATH" webpage says they want a culmative 3.0 GPA from all undergradate course work as well. So again you're going to have to aim for A's and B+'s at minimum to get your average well north of the 2.94 you currently have.

My standard advice is not to shoot for just the minimum GPA to squeak in, but rather give yourself wiggle room by having a high enough average so that should the worse happen (a three or four credit "C" or god forbid "F" you won't go below 3.0.
