ABSN or 2-year Program?

Hi @Heatherau! I had similar scores, though I have never taken the TEAS and I recently got accepted to an ABSN program. I think that having healthcare-related experience is really important when applying to accelerated programs since you won't have much time to gain experience during school before applying to jobs after the program/NCLEX. ABSN programs care greatly about your pre-req GPA so it seems like you would have a good chance getting into schools. I personally think you should try applying to ABSN programs if your goal is to obtain a BSN in the future. That way you save time with your education, but also be aware that these accelerated programs are very intense and require you to commit majority of your time to studying and preparation for classes/clinicals. I have heard some people say they're able to keep a part time job, but most people do not work during the program so that they can keep up with the work. In any case, it sounds grueling, but doable as long as you stay focused. Going the RN-BSN route also works for people, but it will be more years of schooling, but of course if you just want to be able to start working as a nurse that would still benefit you and you could always apply to the AAS programs as a "back up" to the ABSN route.

It really just depends on your financial situation and where you live. Are ADN nurses being hired without a problem? Can you afford to not work for the duration of your ABSN program? Those are pretty much the two main questions lol. If you live in California, some ABSN programs are more difficult to get into than community colleges so you have to account for that too.

I noticed you made another topic about currently attending an ADN program. Are you looking to switch to an ABSN program?

I am looking to switch into an ABSN. I have a bachelors degree and I overthought everything about the ADN program I was in. The previous year only had a 57% pass rate on the NCLEX so I had so many reservations about it. I felt I was in the wrong program so I decided to leave after my first semester, even though I was successful. I regret leaving and would like to try again.

Financially, I can't swing a private school. First off, I should say I live in Massachusetts and most programs are private at about $60-70k. That's why a few of the public schools were appealing but I know they're extra competitive because of that reason. My potential start date wouldn't be until 2019. I want to work and save up so I have the luxury of not having to work while in the program or either that I could work maybe a shift or 2 a week. It's a tough decision because I would either apply to a 2 year school right now (because I have everything I need) or just finish my outstanding prereqs and wait to apply to an accelerated program. In MA, you cannot work in a hospital unless you have a BSN so I'd have to get it anyway. I know that's a lot but your thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!
