ABSN prereq questions

Hello Fellow Nursing Students,

I have a couple questions about Nursing prereqs to apply for ABSN programs.

First of all, I've noticed that a lot of ABSN Programs want students to take Oral Communications as a prereq: during my undergraduate degree I did take Intro to Communications class (though it was not a Speech class specifically) and my degree was a BA in theatre---meaning that I got up in front of rooms full of people weekly and spoke/performed... Do you think my Theatre Degree or the Into to Communications class will fulfill this requirement?

Also, I see a lot of programs require a statistics course, which I also took during my undergrad degree.... The course was called "psychological statistics" and it covered things like probability, mean, median, and mode, et cetera. Do you think the fact that it was called "psychological statistics" and not just plain "into to statistics" will bother schools that I am applying to? Do I have to take this class again?!

Any insight would be tremendously appreciated!!!

Thank you so much!

Sincerely,

ABSN Hopeful Shaina

I would look at each school's transfer guides and see if there are equivalencies between the school you graduated from and the school you're applying from. Most schools have a standing rule on whether they allow psych statistics or math statistics or both, so that's a question you can find an answer to from each school pretty easily. I don't think your degree will translate into credit for a class, but your other speech class might. Just gotta ask.

These are questions you should ask an advisor with the ABSN program. Every school has different course numbers and titles for classes that could very well be the same thing. So the advisor can let you know if the courses you took are equivalent to the courses in their pre-reqs or not. They're used to evaluating transcripts all the time so they'll be able to help you and give you accurate information.
