ABSN Pre-reqs

Hi everyone,

I recently graduated with a bachelor's and I'm trying to find accelerated nursing programs to apply to. The issue I keep running into is that I never took chemistry as a prerequisite because the nursing program at the school I received my bachelor's from didn't require chemistry. I know that I should just take the class but I'm really trying to start nursing school this year and the new school semester in my town already started for Spring semester. I was wondering if anyone knew of schools that don't require chemistry as a prerequisite? So far I have applied to MUSC, NAU, and Bellarmine. Thanks in advance!

Hi!

I recommend you take an accelerated chemistry class, it will open a lot of doors for you. Check out New Mexico Junior College and EICC, they have inexpensive online chemistry classes with lab. Some programs allow you to apply with prereqs in progress. Which locations are you looking for programs at? Are you looking for a traditional or hybrid ABSN program?

I might look into an accelerated chem class. And I'm looking anywhere for programs. I'm willing to relocate wherever I get in. I would prefer a traditional program but I'm open.

The majority of nursing programs (at least the BSN ones for sure) do require Chemistry. You'll just have to do your research in the areas and schools you wish to attend and take it from there.

Keep in mind, if you have never done Chemistry, there are prerequisites to take for Chemistry. What I have encountered is some require you to have an advanced math and introduction to Chemistry class. Make sure you check where you will take Chemistry so that you have the prereqs out of the way and cleared for the class.

If you have never done Chemistry in your lifetime, I wouldn't recommend doing it accelerated. I've noticed Chemistry is one of those classes where a lot of people tank hard or end up withdrawing the first time around. That or end up getting a "C or D," which may not be a good thing if you live in a competitive area for nursing schools.

Good luck

You found and applied to 3 programs, which is great! You might not have to worry about applying to other programs.

Unfortunately, I could not find any ABSN programs that do not require chemistry. If you decide to take an accelerated class be sure to check out Khan Academy and Crash Course Chemistry. Watching these videos before the class begins can help prepare you for the coursework. These resources helped me a lot!

Best wishes on your nursing journey!

Thank you so much for the resources and the encouragement! I’m just nervous about the three programs because my undergrad GPA wasn’t amazing but my prerequisite GPA is pretty good so fingers crossed

I hate to see students struggle/worry/fear science and math classes.

If you need an online Chemistry course, please let me know. Since I teach Chemistry at a small community college, I have flexibility with scheduling and offering of courses. I can do accelerated courses (if you want).

Thank you so much for your help! I actually got an acceptance letter this morning for a school but thank you!

That is great news! Congratulations!
