About to Graduate

Published

Hello Everyone,

I want to say thank you to all of you who share your experiences on this site. I have been in nursing school for almost 2 years and I frequently check in here for tips and support.

I am writing today to glean from you all about the nerves creeping up related to entering the workforce. I am about to graduate from an ADN program and am set to finish the BSN at a local university. I am located in southern California where it is very competitive for new grads to be placed in hospital positions. After much exploration in the nursing school journey, I would like to seek a position in the OR. However, I am a single parent and find that I also need to start working as soon as possible. My concern is if I take a clinic position, is it then too difficult to be considered for any acute employment?

I welcome your thoughts and experiences!

Take whatever job you can get. Even new grads in southern CA who are educated at the BSN degree level are not securing their dream jobs. In addition, it is taking many months for some of them to find any work.

You lack a BSN, so you are not in a position to be selective. What if you cannot even secure a clinic position? You need to be open to everything, including SNF/rehab, hospice, home health, private duty, group homes, county jails, etc.

Good luck to you!

Whatever pays the bills and gets you experience is a win.

Thank you. That is great advice :)
