  1. Hi Just to let you know. I trained P2K and finished in Sept 2001 specialising in psyche. I did not have any problems with my hours fulfilliing the canadian requirements. Maybe each uni was different, im not sure but I do have quite a few psyche friends here who also did P2K nursing. However, I also have friends in UK who attended a different uni who are having problems with their hours not being enough.
  2. Hi all For the nurses who have moved from the UK to Canada on this forum, what have been your impressions on the canadian health system as compared to the NHS. Do you thinK that the NHS is more organised or not and is how we nurse in UK better or not. Im psyche trained (project 2000) RMN working in AB. Just curious:nurse:
  3. I trained in the UK mental health and a lot of our system is similiar to Oz. I too am trying to understand the canadian health system and I am finding it a lot different from UK. We use the pyxis on the unit I am at and that is not so bad but its just getting used to how things are done here. There is a mixture here of nursing on the unit i work ie. IVs on psyche unit and people with kidney failures and we even had to do blood transfusion on the unit. I am finding it all a bit hap hazard and have a lot to learn. Sometimes i think of returning home but its always good to experience how different countries nurse in the different areas of nursing. Having said this, is this the norm for canadian mental health wards/units in other hospitals. I am working in AB. Any info would be great.
  4. I understand what you are going through. I applied with VHA and nothing really materialised. Applied with Fraser health and had a face to face interview at the nursevancouver thing in London and they promised to arrange a phone interview with the hiring department. Never heard anything. I did get a private hospital that still asks me if I would like to work for them in BC. However, I did get a job in Alberta and the interview with the hiring dept took place 4 Dec, all went well and they informed me that they would like me to start as soon as and the aim was for February therefore, they are going to sent out my paperwork as soon as possible. Its over a month and I am still waiting. Its extremely frustrating and difficult to plan things as there is no word from them. I get the feeling that things move a lot slower in canada than here. It would be good if at least they could let one know via a small email message if there is a reason for the delay. I am planning on phoning them and check otherwise i may have to do some serious thinking. So you are not alone. there is also another girl I know who is in the same position. Hope this provides some comfort knowing that its probably the way things are done in canada...which is worrying
  5. I agree with Guitaguy2. I would like to know more of that. I trained in UK and fortunately my diploma included general nursing as well but not as much as I would have liked.
  6. Hi Sarah As far as I know you will be paid as a new grad until you have written and passed the crnbc. After that they will pay you at your level of experience ie, step 9 for the nine years experience. Im not sure if you will be paid the diffference of new grad salary and RN when you have passed the exam - maybe someone on here could answer that for you. At least thats the information I got when I was researching and at the interview I have been to in AB. I am sure that If I am wrong in this info, someone will correct me and I am sure what i left out, someone will add on because there are a lot of people on this site with valuable information on this site. How did the interview go if you have had it already? Have a good day.
  7. Hi guys Best of luck and I am sure you did well. Did you have the interview here in UK or did you guys eventually go to Canada for vacation. I too found the questions quite interesting and different from what I would be asked here in an interview. Again, I wish you guys the best of luck :)
  8. That is soooo funny, got me laughing after coming back home miserable.:lol2:
  9. Hi fiona I would be a walking disaster if you allowed me on your ward. I actually work in Psyche and place me there, I will shine . My area is adult psychiatry and will be moving into this area when i eventually arive in AB....sooner than later I hope. Have a beautiful day...
  10. hey...good to see you getting a lot of great advice. I completed my registration and all in BC. I have decided to work in AB, thanks to some great advice on this site and have a job with capital health. Im currently transferring my registration from BC to AB and hopefully everything can be done by November. I had no idea that a police check takes that long, was told by essex police it can be up to 40 days so thats what i am basically waiting for really. Again, dont hold back, be adventurous and i think Canada is a country for that coz its so beautiful and vast!!. Hope you enjoy your vacation. :)
  11. I too am in the process of trying to move to canada. I have been there a couple of times in BC and loved it instantly. One thing i noticed was how cleaner it was from here. The scenery is breath taking whichever way you look at it. I found the people quite nice and the streets not as crowded as here (talking about London). Maybe you need to just take a vacation out there and see for yourself but I find the times I go there on vacation, i feel healthier and refreshed. Hope you go ahead and follow your dreams. :)
  12. Congratulations!! BTW, are you from Zim, I am too.
  13. Hi Jane Hope you well. The week I sent out an application to VCH is the week I got the job in AB and I understand that AB are now the highest paid nurses in Canada???. Thank God He works in mysterious ways . Sure u can pick my brains anytime, I would be happy to help or give info about the exams or what I know about BC. Have you been there before? Which part of UK are you in. I work in West London but am an Essex girl, not by birth though. You can sent me a Private message. Its a weired world, I might even know you.. Take care, God bless and have a good day. Rach
  14. Hi Jane I was looking to move to Vancouver but FHA told me after the interview that they did not have any openings in MH and would contact me after they have some. Meanwhile, I was offered a job by Capital Health Authority in Alberta which I have accepted. I am in the process of transferring my registration to AB. I am hoping to move by end of this year...which part of BC are you going to. I know for sure that you will love it coz its soooo beautiful. Hope your move goes well and good luck.
