I'm still a lil confused, maybe someone can help. I'm interested in attending nursing school after I graduate in May (BS in health promotion). After I get my BSN in nursing, I'd like to work in the E.R. ,,,,,,not to sound offensive but, I don't exactlly want to change old people's underware. How do you distinguish what type of work to go into. For example, what determines wether you are tending to recovering patients that are staying at the hospital or you are in the O.R or E.R?? Is this just a matter of where you apply? I hope this isn't a dumb question.....thank you all for promply and thoughtfully answering my previous posts!! :kiss

While you are in nursing school, you will have clinical rotations in many different areas of the hospital and different types of clinical settings. That will give you a chance to find out what types of nursing you like, which types you don't like, etc.

As you graduate and get a nursing job, you apply for a specific clinical setting -- a specific hospital or agency and a specific patient care unit within that hospital. With any luck, you'll be able to land a job in an area that you like.

But what if someone comes into the ER and needs to be cleaned up? This could be the equivalent to "changing old people's underwear." You can't just refuse to do it if you are a nurse. Plus, during clinicals I'm sure you will come across much underwear changing. Honestly, if you aren't prepared to do things like this you may be dissapointed. Not to sound discouraging. I'm not a nurse YET, but I do know the job includes a lot of helping of other people who cannot help themselves. THis might include changing of underwear.

I agree.. Once you start going through nursing school, learning the different content, and experiencing the different clinical settings you will be able to determine what you enjoy learning about more... and of course what is NOT for you. I started nursing school with nooo idea what I wanted to focus on. Now I just got hired in an ER!!! It takes time and study to figure this out especially if you don't have any healthcare exp. Good luck to you. As for the cleaning up patients.. Nobody enjoys doing this, but it will always be something nurses do. Those are the most basic and primitive things...and code browns are inevitable.
