After passing NCLEX-RN, when does the lpn license become invalid? Is it when the RN license arrives in the mail or right away??

This is a query for your board of nursing. In some states as long as you renew and complete your continuing education you may be licensed as both an LPN & RN.

I don't believe I can hold both licenses in my state, Illinois. But I'm curious, what would be the benefit to keeping both licenses?

I renewed my LPN license up until this year simply because old habits die hard. I had those things in my possession far longer (27years) than the RN (3years). I was finally resolved in the fact that it was okay to say goodbye to 'em. Lol!

But another more serious reason was that my last name changed after I received the RN license. No problem as far as that goes because I was issued a new license. But my ACLS, BLS, etc., had the old name so the LPN license, along with an old temporary drivers license (photo ID) was very useful in proving that I was one in the same when it came down to having to show current credentials until it was time for recerts. There was no way to prove it by pulling my license number on the BON because they update all licenses when a name is changed. Of course, this is in Georgia.

Basically, I kept all of the old stuff until I had received all new stuff. And everything started with the issuance of a new social security card before the BON would make ANY changes to a license here down south and at times, it seemed the social security administration was in no hurry to make any changes.
