cms

my er nurse director along with a handful of other dept directors just got back from california from attending a cms workshop. i was informed that in the future cms will penalize hospitals for pts not following through with their medication and health care regimen that was taught to them upon d/c from the er or hospital floor. the hospital would not be reinbursed by cms if the pt returns to the hospital for the same complaint if the hospital cannot show some form of evidence that tthe pt was not only supplied adequate d/c educational materail ( which we already do and sure your facility does aswell) and provide follow through to ensure the pt is complying with their medical regimen! now being primarily an er nurse myself i see this as a big stink hole..just how am i supose to be responsible for what a pt does once they are d/c'd from my care...how? im hoping i have misread the memo along with everyone else...have yall heard of such?

I think that's probably what you are talking about!!

One hospital in my town is opening up a whole nursing department to follow up with patients to prove if they did/did not follow up with their family doctor or take their meds as they were supposed to. Crazy what the world is coming to!

CMS is the new Joint Commission. They need to be stopped!
