I am another of those who have spent 20+ years in the IT industry and have burned out. I am looking seriously about what it will take to become a nurse. I know that my age at 45 and the fact I'm male isn't an issue, but I do have a minor disability. About 5 months ago I suffered a CRVO and have lost most of the sight in my right eye. My left is fine at 20/20 corrected. I've adapted fairly well to life as a monovision person.

Is it going to be an issue? I don't know of any nurses with this sort of problem.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm wondering if posting your question on a board where there are nurses (instead of us students) where it might elicit responses from those who can speak from experience, as you've asked for.

Personally, I don't think it should limit you, since your vision is find in your other eye.

Good luck to you! (My husband is in the IT field and loves it, though I personally find it completely unfulfilling and meaningless in the scheme of things. (I worked in it briefly -- hated it.)

I've got basically no sight in my right eye either (and am 20/20 in the left with corrective lenses as well), and got accepted into a selective program with the admissions committee well aware of the disability. On top of that I'm learning disabled -- if they'll take me, I'm certain it won't be a problem for you.

Have you ever thought of working in a cannery, air traffic control, or as a greeter at Walmart?-- no kidding nursing is a nightmare. I am not making fun of your disabilities, but i don't enjoy nursing anymore. and I am 45 years old and have done nursing for the past 15 years. it is gruelling, mind-numbing work.
