It's been quite a while since I have been active on this site... Last time I visited I posted a thread looking for an evening nursing program in Illinois, this was back in 2008.. well I did not have any luck. Looks like there is not any kind of nursing programs in my area that support my busy schedule, and Now I have another baby and it makes it that much harder. Regardless I have stressed the fact and have came to a conclusion of applying to South Suburban College ADN nursing program to Enter this fall, the counselor I met with seemed very optimistic about me getting in since my GPA is 3.86 I believe!! Im really undecided on weather im making the right choice.. I currently work in a Plumbing Supply house in Calumet Park IL my pay is good I basically make as much as an LPN would make at the moment probably a little more... Im happy with my salary especially now days that the economy is so bad, but I really want to pursue my career of nursing that I have been holding off for quite a while. If i get admitted to the Nursing program it will be to start this Fall in August, I will have to kind of Jeopordize my job since I work morninings and the only time they offer nursing programs are mornings. I will have to ask my job to see if they are kind enough and flexible to work with my school schedule! wich I hope they do!!! it will be 4 more semesters until I become an RN.?? Im wondering if Im making the right decision!?? any suggestions??? any little bit helps.. im still going to apply for the program though! is anyone familiar on how SSC nursing program is!!! and what i have to look forward too??

i am in a similar position...i have been in a stable full time job that pays a decent salary (around starting pay for an rn), but realized this just isn't where my heart is. i have to face the same decision you do, as i also live in the chicago area and there are not really any adn programs that meet outside of my work hours. right now i am taking one prereq at a time on the weekends at waubonsee, but when they are completed i will probably have to quit my job and find a part time one that pays much less while i am in school.

but i think if you are like me, taking that risk will be worth it if it means you can have a career that you find fulfilling. work is such a big part of our lives...you should do something that makes you happy, not something that just gets you by. for me, i need a job that continues to challenge me to grow as a person but also leaves me feeling like i have made a difference. when i have doubts of my decision, i think about what my current job will be like in 10 years, and what my job could be like in 10 years if i was a nurse. then i know i have made the right decision.

if nursing is your dream, don't be afraid to go after it! every dream takes some sacrifice to achieve, and you will find a way to make it all work out. stay positive and good luck! :)

Capella 44, Thanks for the Encouragement.. And Yes we can totally relate we are in a very similar situation. To tell you the Truth I love my present Job, but like you said who knows where this job will take me in the future. We are incredibly slow here at my job they have laid off around 20 people and Today they let go of another 2. I know I want to be a Nurse, I have had my mind set to this wonderfull career for a long time and I really want to pursue my Dream! I am soo exited about getting into the nursing program this fall! I know it will have to sacrifice a little on the economic perspective but it will be all worth it at the end!

Latinadream, I graduated from SSC in July from their LPN program, I was in the RN program but failed a class and was given the choice to go into the LPN program or take a extra classes to raise my GPA then apply for RN program. SSC overall is a good school. I started out working in an office downtown making more than an LPN starting salary but it was always my dream to be a nurse and being a nurse offers more job security than the position I was in. Both programs are very rigorous, I worked full time in the beginning but towards the end I was working maybe 2 days a week. If your current position will allow u to work at night then u might be able to work full time and go to school but it will be hard. Nursing school is going to be the hardest thing you will ever do in life! Its not just the classes, but u will have clinicals that u have to show up for @ 6:30 am 2x's a week (NO EXCUSES). I say go for it because if u dont try how will u know what you can accomplish. If u have any questions send me a PM. Good Luck!

I graduated from SSC in 09 from the ADN program. For me it was almost impossible for me to work because they give you enormous amount of studying to do in a small amount of time. Some girls did work and pass but ended up dropping their work hours or quitting their jobs all together in order to pass. I would not recommend working if you can afford it. The amount of studying is about 4 hours per day in order to be successful (at least for me). Good luck! PM if u have any questions.
