ok so this is my deal...:zzzzz so im just starting my 1st year of the rn program this fall, ill be taking pharm( i hear horror stories about that class...) anywhoo, my school offered a math class this summer geared for nursing student to prepare us for the pharm class, which so far has been going well. we are now on iv drips, calculations and all that good stuff. so far i can do the da problems and havent had too much of a problem. (although this is not a pharm class yet...)i see the the problem and i am able to put it into da solution and come up with the correct answer(most of the time..=) my ordeal is i really never gotten familiar with an iv, iv pump, infusion rate, any thing to do with an iv..... so i feel like im just really doing math and not really knowing what the numbers are meaning??? what im trying to say is i dont know the equipment and how it works and what it means when it is brought in to terms to iv calcualtions, iv drips, etc... we are using dimensional analysis for meds by curren.

if any one knows of any websites that would be a great tool or any info they can pass my way it would be greatly appreciated! or maybe im just thinking i just need to wait it out until i get more experience in the program and than ill be getting more familiar w/ iv's....

Do not worry about feeling like you are just doing the math without understanding the principals behind it. That is all a math for nurses class expects of you. When you get to pharmacology you will be ahead of the curve because you will be able to focus on learning the meds and the administration without having to worry about the math. At my school, you could not administer meds without passing the med math test with 100%. So many of the students were wasting valuable time studying for and reatking the test.

here's the deal. . .

1. this class is to learn how to do the mathematical calculations only
   
2. you'll get to the hands on stuff when you get into your nursing classes and get to clinical sites.
   
3. here is a virtual iv pump that you can play around with a little bit (http://classes.kumc.edu/general/ivpump/ivsimulation.html), it does have specific clinical iv situations programmed into it that may not make any sense to you now. one of the scenarios does not work correctly (incorrect programming).
