i want to become a CRNA. im confident that i can handle the coursework, but some of my fellow nursing students have scared me by telling me its extremely hard. i was wondering if you could recommend a textbook (one that your required to buy) that gives a good sense of how the coursework is.

Basics of Anethesia by miller. Often referred to as baby miller. New edition just came out...get that one.

The concepts are not difficult. The quantity of info is the difficult part. MEMORIZATION. Trust me...anyone can do it.

Don't let your nursing classmates scare you.

The CRNAs who post regularly on this board all assure us that if you are willing to put in the time to study and work hard, have a modicum of common sense and the ability to remain calm under pressure, you CAN make it.

Why not try to shadow a CRNA and see for yourself?

binge and purge.. that's what works for me.. i study 2-3 days pre exam, do fine, and move on.. agree with above post, volume not concept is the hook.. however, there are some points that need further explanation than others, but that goes without saying.. ex: pressure-volume loops for me.. eh, who knew? so, anyway, don't sweat it.. school really isn't that hard..

Anesthesia school is a big commitment. Very worth it. I am almost done with my 1st semester of school. The book I found very helpful is written by a nurse anesthetist. Nurse Anesthesia by John J. Nagelhout is a fundamental book in my course work. The other book I seem to really like is Clinical Anesthesiology by Morgan/Mikhail/Murray. Those two books are what is getting me geared to clinical in Jan. School is about adult learning. There are many ways to learn a concept. Anesthesiology audio digest is also great. I listened to those CD's before my interviews. The CD's helped me understand my ICU nursing and study for CCRN. The fear you feel is healthy...anesthesia is not for everyone but, the more info you can get and expose yourself too will lead you to your answer. Follow a CRNA and create your own path...don't go off hearsay without finding the answers appropriate for yourself. It is a good step that you found this website.
