Our census is low. In the whole hospital, obviously because of this being a holiday weekend.

At 0500, when I have just woken up and am still tired, they call and ask if I want to be put on call. I hate having to use PTO but i can be home with the kids. 4 of us had to be put on call-no needs in the hospital, no where to even float to.

At least I should be able to work tomorrow (we alternate holidays every year) and make the holiday pay so I will still make more this week.

We had Christmas dinner last night because I was supposed to work the weekend, but now I an spend the day with the boys and we can do presents at a normal hour rather than wait until I get home (usually 2100 ish).

Does your unit allow people to volunteer to be put on call? I've rarely worked anywhere that there weren't plenty of takers unless the low census drags on past the holidays.

Do you get paid call pay if you're on call or are you using your PTO but still not totally free?
