Hello,
I've been an operating room rn for 10 years. I am interested in starting my own agency in an effort to work for myself. At this time I do not have any interest in hiring other nurses to work for me. This would be solely for me to make more money, have autonomy, and to take advantage of opportunities that come with having your own business. I have gone ahead and created my LLC under my name. What would be my next steps in this process. Do I need to draw up a contract and start calling some human resources departments at hospitals? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bill.

Have you looked into the laws specific to your location? How about spoken with others who have created their own nursing business in your area? Many areas have different rules/regulations, so you should be fully informed about them.
Thank you. I live in New Jersey. I have been researching the laws for this area. I do not know of anyone in this area that works for themselves. I do know that the hospital I work for is hiring travel nurses as well as other hospitals in the area.

Check nursing act for your state there will be a nurse agency act that spells everything out. I'm not sure but I think you have to set yourself up as an agency. I took this route then after six months I started getting interested in hiring employees.

I would
1. Read my state specific laws regarding nurse agencies
2. Seek a free consultation with a tax attorney
3. Call my Chamber of Commerce to network for any potential mentors (someone may know someone in a different area that started their own agency. This way you will not be seen as competition)
Thanks for your replies. I will definitely check out those suggestions.
