working the observation floor

I am taking a night position on our hospital's observation unit.

I have 3 years of med-surg, and am wondering what to expect.

Does anyone here work on an obs unit?

I worked an ER-OBS unit as a new grad. It was more of an extension of ER and used for the "easy fixes" or holds for the floor or 23 hour hold and sometimes IV meds.

I hated it. It was SOOOO boring, but that might have been just me.

I went to the ER after about 3 months and never looked back. :lol2:

Some people just loved that unit though!!!

Good luck!

We are just about to get this type of floor at the hospital I am working for (I work agency but this hospital exclusively). I really never heard of one before....

We live in a small area, so this is a small hospital. But lately things are developing and the towns around are getting huge by the year!!! So they have to expand this one hospital. I guess they are putting the PACU from near the ER up to a floor they just renevated (use to be a LTC floor), and opening up ER to ER1 and ER2...ER2 being more observation than anything....

Actually...I have been an ER gal forever, but the mismanagement of our local ER kept me from even going there doing that! LOL. Maybe I will check out the new ER2 once established and see if changes were done to make their ER tolerable!

But I don't know...I sure do love the folks I work with in Med surge right now (great department...more fun than any other dept!).

Hmmmm lots of assessments I bet.................and probably lots of different types of pts. Anyone know of a good all around assessment book or other tool that might come in handy?
