Working while going to school

In a perfect world, no one would have to work while going to nursing school. I'm going to be in the same boat as you. I remember hearing somewhere that it was impossible to work and go to school, but unfortunately, a lot of people have to do it that way. One of my sister's good friends just got her RN and she worked full time the whole time. It took her a bit longer, but she did it. It's going to be tough, but I'm sure you can do it. Just remember the big picture. You're going to be a great !!!!

It sucks and its hard but the good news is that it can be done. It just takes some good organizational skills and time management skills. I'm doing it now. I'm tired, but I'm hanging in there. You can do it!

Several of the girls I went to school with were in the same boat. Our typical schedule was M-F 10-5:30. They worked on Saturday and Sunday. One of them would actually work a 3rd then come in on occasion.

Hey there everyone..

Come Februrary I will be going to school mon-fri 8-4. Im a little worried about working and going to school at the same time. Without a doubt I need to work and make some kind of income to make ends meet. Not to mention I have a one and a half year old. Im married and have a wonderful supporting family, but even with his income it wont be enough....Has anyone been in my position and what did you do???

If you're going to go to school M-F 8 -4, when will you work? When will you study? When will you see your baby and your husband? When will you sleep? How long will this schedule last? You might need to put your ends closer together for awhile. Can you get financial aid to help?

I tried that and I can tell you from experience........

it is very hard and does not make for good grades

I went to school m-f as well and worked at a local hospital on the weekends. It was tough but I made it. It does have an effect on the grades though. My last year I quit working all toegether for my critical care courses and clinicals, and took out loans enought to cover tuition AND bills. I'm still paying on those loans 11 years later, but no regrets!

I have worked 15-30 hours a week whenever I've been in school, for my first degree and now for the year plus that I've been working on prereqs. I have a husband now, but no kids yet. He has a decent job, but doesn't make enough to support two people unless we make some serious lifestyle changes. It's not easy, but you have to do what you have to do. Working during school forces you to manage your time well (severely limit the time you spend posting on boards such as these!), and if it's not too many hours you'll probably be OK. Once real nursing school starts I'm going to cut down to 2 days a week, and if my grades start to slip I'l quit my job and eat ramen noodles. Good luck!
