Work Under Pressure

Thank you for saying that. It burns me every time that I hear someone say that OR nursing is a technician's job, a monkey could do it, or you don't use your nursing skills.

I would love to see a floor nurse, an ED nurse, or an ICU nurse try to properly set around a room, set up a procedure, position a patient, trouble shoot down equipment, appease an angry surgeon, provide ideas to circumvent unanticipated events, identify a kocher, know the risks of machinery, understand a pneumoperitoneum, and the risks associated to such a necessary thing, etc, etc, etc.

I would want an RN - no - I would want an educated and experienced PERIOPERATIVE RN caring for my loved one in the OR. Certainly not a monkey.

A. A good percentage of RNs would DECOMPENSATE and RUN AWAY, if they had to do our job for 1 hour.. so if you are saying the OR is boring, you have absolutely zero knowledge of what we do. It’s the complete opposite of boring!

B. No, it is JUST not TRADITIONAL nursing, we care for patients , just in a different capacity....just like floor nurses care for patients; ours just happen to be under anesthesia, being cut by a surgeon, who,,by the way-.might as well be considered the 2nd patient! Because you are responsible for everything he needs, to keep him happy.... WHY? Because that’s MY patient under those drapes , on that table... and who wants an irritated, distracted surgeon who doesn’t have what he needs , performing surgery on you? I don’t want that for MY patients...I want my surgeon calm, confident in his team, and everything he needs within reach and ensure every case runs smoothly , because, again , THATS MY PATIENT HES CUTTING...
