Will Officer Accession Pilot Program (OAPP) be available for FY 2011?

Published

Hello All,

Does anyone know at this time whether the officer Accession Pilot Program (OAPP) will be available in fiscal year (FY) 2011?

I spoke with our local recruiter and she told me that it's currently still a "Pilot" program (which I knew) and that she doesn't yet know whether it will be continued beyond this year. She stated that perhaps by August or September she'll know.

In addition, they aren't taking any Med Surg nurses currently. I've been practicing Occupational Health Nursing for the past 10 years and it seems Med Surg is the only way for me to go. BTW, I just turned 50 and in overall good health. There's nothing that should prevent me from passing the physical (no previous service, either).

Can anyone shed any light on this at this time?

I have only anecdotal comment on this... it was a limited program aimed to have a short term fix on low numbers of junior grade officers in critical positions... since the recent turn of the economy the shortage of nursing officer candidate/2Lts has turned into a surplus and I personally see little reason they would continue the program when accession of younger officers who are more likely and able to progress to fill senior grade officer ranks is available...

I usually stay out of the Army's business (because I know jack about it) but I'm wondering about this because it is still on their website. It also says it's age-specific.

I'm certainly not correcting you, just (mainly because I know exactly what you're talking about and I'm seeing the same thing in the Air Force) - but I am definitely curious since it sounds like a great opportunity for some folks.

This is actually still available! I'm 43 years old with a BSN and I have experience in Emergency nursing as an RN. I am looking to go into the OAPP and I just heard back from my recruiter who states I qualify. I am calling her tomorrow to gather more information and I will be filling out the paperwork once I have the say so to sign up!

I'm so excited! I was very disappointed when I found out that had I signed up 1 year earlier, I would have met the age requirement. Now that I know I have this as an option, I'm very excited about serving my country and wounded soldiers.

Wish me luck! :-)

I wish you luck. Keep us informed on your progress. If the OAPP does still exist that would be great.
