Where do you work???

To all the CRNA's --

Where do you work - hopsital versus out patient settings? And how many hours a week do you work (including call)? Any regrets?

I ask for my own information - I'm 45 yo RN with many years ICU experience trying to decide if CRNA would be a good thing to pursue.

I love technical work (love working with vents, monitors, and gtts) I do enjoy patient interaction, I'd like more autonomy and of course better pay as I get closer to retirement.

What I don't want is to work 60 hours a week and not have time at home. Been there done that with a management job.

It all depends on the setting you work in. I know many CRNAs who work 60 hours a week between their full-time and per diem jobs. My schedule varies somewhat, but I usually work 7-3:30 mon-fri. I also pick up a call shift about one weekend a month. This year I have to work Christmas Eve but that is my only holiday.

At this point in my career I value time off over money. I work about 32 hours a week and make over 100,000. Many find it hard to resist the opportunity for more hours/money. Often they have kids to raise and educate, I don't. I love the work, but like anything else it can become drudgery if you spend to much time at it. As a friend of mine in the business says "Yeah I make 250,000. but I.m not salaried and each one of those hours have to be put in to make that money." Good luck Ed
