I am a new RN with 8 yrs LPN experience. I could use some help.. Nothing against people who work Medsurg, but it isn't for me. (The nurses on my floor ROCK).
I am trying to find out where I want to go next after medsurg and I am really struggling since covid messed up our clinicals . Luckily, I had great clinicals in LPN school. Medsurg is too much running around busy for me, and seems super task oriented. Trust me, I LIKE being busy but it just seems like a busy I can't get used to. Some days are super smooth and then I take extra time to care for my patients. My time management is overall pretty well except last week when I got an admit almost right away before I even assessed or passed my meds for anyone. Then of course the patient was in awful pain and nausea with no new orders in yet. That threw off my mojo.
Sorry, besides the point. Sometimes I feel I am running for this or that more than being able to critically think about my patient or physically DO nursing actions. I want a happy medium:
Hands on, not rushed for time almost non-stop,not running around for multiple patients. I want mentally stimulating, I don't mind doing a lot for my patients (I want to!) But I think having so many patients at once is what I dislike. I want to feel busy, but also that I have time for my patients. (Just call me Goldilocks I guess ???♀️) maybe it doesn't exist. I am a busy body also.
Please nobody take offense ,I am just trying to find my niche. I know I'm not the only one, or the only one who feels this way about medsurg because I've seen it over and over again.
I feel like I do a good job, I have a great foundation, I enjoy learning.
I just don't feel it's for me . .
Any insight on ICU(I heard it's very busy/exhausting mentally but in a different way.), PACU, Endo, OR, Mom/Baby, NICU, IR??
Anyone else that felt that way- where did you find that fits you?! I am going to try and shadow, I think.
