whats the possibility?...

Published

i know there is a much faster and easier route to do this, but i figured i would ask anyways.

what is the possibility that an LPN can still work as an LPN at their current place of employment while getting their BSN...but a more winded route

i.e LPN gets their ASN, and then continues to get BSN...while still working as an LPN

i guess what i want to know is... once i get my ASN, if i deter taking the nclex to get my BSN, would i still be able to keep my current place of employment as an LPN even though i have the education of an ASN- RN but chose not to take the boards until i got my bsn?

It all depends on your state Nurse Practice Act. Some states do not permit licensed nurses to work 'below' their license. The underlying problem is that you are always accountable for applying your clinical knowledge & judgement to clinical situations. Many employers would not allow this either because if you were working as an LPN and encountered a situation in which you knew your RN supervisor's clinical decision was wrong, you'd have to apply your own judgement rather than his. This would be a very problematic issue for any employer.

To me it sounds like you will be eligible to take your RN boards but have not taken them. So you are not an RN.

To me it sounds like you have a LPN license and want to work as a LPN. To me it sounds ok

I would check your nurse practice act, call or email the board of nursing, call your insurance carrier, and check with HR at your place of employment.

Best wishes.

thanks for the responses! truly appreciate it. I checked out the NPA for my state, but it only defines each role and its responsibilities for that individual once they are licensed or registered, but not exactly answering my question. I will most likely end up calling the board of nursing and seeing what their response it.

I am an LPN right now and i want to get my BSN via online. there are very few choices for LPN to BSN online classes. I was hoping to go through excelsior and getting my ADN and then jumping into a BSN program before taking the boards. i guess i shall find out the answer soon enough
