What will CA do with the 30 unit Rn's?

Published

Hi everyone!

I am considering the 30 unit option RN here in California. I have heard many rumors from colleagues that soon all RNs will be required to get a BSN. I do not plan on specializing in anything. Is there anyone out there that has more insight on this topic? Is there any 30 unit option RNs out there that wished they had gone for their ADN instead? Thanks!

The rumors of a BSN being required came about due to an IOM report recommending that 80% of nurses hold a BSN. It is not a requirement for licensure as that would require legislation. However, there are many faculties that are either flat out requiring a BSN to apply or strongly preferring them.

Another er thing to consider with the CA 30 unit option is the possibility of endorsing the license to another state should you move- there are some who will not recognize certain paths to licensure as qualifying in that state.

30 unit option is not transferrable to any other state because you don't graduate It's a license only valid in CA and you can't work at sites that their credentials mandate nurses be graduates of nursing school
