What is the proper procedure for administering Propofol? I have googled this but have not found anything very helpful. Mostly what I am finding is for patients so it doesn't explain so much how as why and what to do. Any help is appreciated.

propofol is in a grey area; used for anesthesia. There are lots of discussions about whether nurses should ever be pushing it, ICU nurses run drips for intubated patients with it. It is my understanding that only anesthetists and MDs should push it; although it many ERs it is used for conscious sedation. We give it, but only with the doc in the room, the crash cart at the bedside. It greatest benefit is the really short half life, they are out and then they're not!

Time out for the procedure,

MD at bedside

crash cart immediately available

orders written

patent IV

use the minimum dosage to keep the pt under

this isn't comprehensive, but hope it helps a little. Your facility should have its own policy regarding administration. If they don't, I wouldn't give it.
