What do you make?

Published

This was on my face-book page this morning what do you think?

You're a nurse?? That's cool, I wanted to do that when I was a kid. What do you make?" "WHAT DO I MAKE??" I make holding your hand seem like the most important thing in the world when you're scared for your baby's life. I can make your child breathe and I can make your child's heart beat when they stop. I make myself work all night and get to bed at 9am to make sure your baby has the medicine, and... care she needs to live. I work all night to save the lives of strangers babies. I make my family wait for me until I know your family member is taken care of. I make myself skip lunch so that I can make sure that everything I did for your baby today is charted. I make myself work weekends and holidays because babies don't just get sick Monday thru Friday. Today, I might save your baby's life, or the baby of someone who will never know what I did for them. "I make a difference, what do you make?"

I made some additions to really focus on NICU nurses.

"You're a NICU nurse?? That's cool, I always wanted to hold and rock babies for a job. Tell me, what do you make?"

"YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT I MAKE??"

I make holding your hand seem like the most important thing in the world when you're scared for your baby's life.

I make your child breathe again when they stop.

I make you forget about all the lines and tubes and see the beautiful baby underneath.

"I know you're scared, but you will thank me for making you kangaroo with Baby Jack. Look, his O2 sats are already up!"

I can make the manliest dad cry tears of joy the first time he holds his three pound daughter.

I make you learn to care for your baby, even when your hands are trembling and the diaper change takes fifteen minutes.

I make sure memories are preserved in pictures, cuteness doesn't happen on schedule.

I make parents believe their baby is in the best possible hands so they get a goodnight sleep, even if I don't leave that bedside the entire shift.

I make myself work all night and get to bed by 9am to make sure your baby has a rested nurse for the care she needs to live.

I make myself work weekends and holidays because babies don't just get sick Monday thru Friday.

I keep doctors from making errors that could cost your baby their life.

I make babies feel loved even if their parents can't come in that day.

I can make the most miserable, withdrawing baby smile after hours of crying.

I make my family wait for me until I know your family member is taken care of.

I make myself skip lunch so that I can make sure that everything I did for your baby is charted.

Today, I might save your baby's life or the baby of someone who will never know what I did for them.

I make a difference, what about you?

I've just printed it out for the break room, will remind everyone what a good job we actually do instead of being moaned at for wearing the wrong shoes ;)
