What is a DON?

I tried to do a search but it says my word was too short/too common, etc. and did not return any matches.

I'm not in nursing school yet, but I keep seeing reference to a DON in threads here. I'm guessing it's some sort of charge nurse or supervisor?

Director of Nursing.....of course it has been a long time since I worked longterm care and it could have changed since then.

Still Director of Nursing, generally in a nursing home.
