What are my chances?

Hi all!

I'm finishing up my undergraduate degree in Psychology at an Ohio university. I have taken all of my nursing pre-requisites, but I have gotten C's in the sciences besides Chemistry. My overall gpa is a 3.2, and a 3.5 in my major. I have been a nurses aide for 2 years and I also have a previous degree in Early Childhood Education. I'm just wondering what my chances are for being accepted to an accelerated 2nd degree nursing course, or a direct entry master's nursing course? Any and all information will be much appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!

J.A.

Your overall GPA sounds acceptable, but I highly doubt that you would be accepted into a Master's Nursing Program without first being a nurse. I might be wrong about that-you should check into that.

Your background education sounds great! I wish you all the best!

Thank you for the reply!

The master's program is a direct-entry program. It is designed for those who have a degree in another field who wish to pursue nursing. The first 13-18 months (depending on the school) is the accelerated RN portion, and then the next two years are the specialty portion. Do you think my C grades in A&P, Microbiology and Pharmacology will be a major problem?

Moved to Pre-Nursing forum.

It will all depend upon the competitiveness of the program.

Good luck with your DE program goals.

Honestly, it might pose a problem, but you would serve yourself well by speaking directly with the nursing admissions officer. The LAST thing you want to do is spend all of the time and energy (not to mention money) applying for the program only to be told that you have to re-take the courses you mentioned.

If they DO tell you that you need to re-take the courses, you can always look into placing out of them. I also have a degree in another (completely unrelated-PolySci) field, and when my nursing admissions officer told me that I had to take Soc 101, I asked her if there was another option. She told me that I could take an exam that would place me out of that class requirement. Does that make sense? I am tired, forgive me.

I have no idea if that would be an option for you, but it never hurts to find out. Get as much information as you can from the admissions officer, and you will breathe a bit easier.
