Week 2 of orientation over...

Published

Well, overall it was a pretty good week... I learned a lot. Patient care is the easy part for me... learning the hospitals procedures and policy is kicking my butt so far. But, I know I'll get it eventually and if I don't know something I usually ask. Well, as I said it's week two and I already have 4 patients, is this normal? My NM told me 1pt for week 1, 2 for week 2... 3pt for week 3 and so on and so forth. I mean it's not a problem but it's not giving me a chance to learn the "hospital stuff" when I'm so busy with patients.

Anyways somoene tell me what this lab is. LMP? I forgot to ask and I'd like to know before monday.

Anyways, I have ups and downs throughout the day... like when I feel I did something stupid... but I know I'm learning so I should just brush it off. But one thing did bother me today... I'm an LPN so I have to have an RN do my push meds.... so I asked her she said yes but she sighed and I could tell she was having an internal hissy-fit. I think she knows I'm new and I KNOW she knows it's in her job description.... how should I handle this?

Other than that I love my floor, my preceptors are so nice and awesome and in general everyone is super friendly. I work on a med/surg floor so I am learning tons of new information. I LOVE IT!

I'm happy to hear that your orientation is going well! I start my orientation in about two weeks and I'm a little nervous about it but it makes me feel better when people talk about having good orientations. I don't know, I guess I'm being pessimistic and buying into all of the stereotypes that I'll be eaten alive by the older nurses, yelled at by the doctors, and entirely overwhelmed, but it probably won't be like that. As far as the RN acting slightly displeased that she had to help with your meds, you know you were doing the right thing, so it's certainly nothing you should worry about it. If I ever had to get an RN to watch me do something or sign off on this or that and she didn't look to happy about it, I pretty much would just ignore her comments because I knew the rules and what I had to do and it certainly wasn't my fault if she didn't think they important or whatever. Well, thanks for sharing the good news about your orientation thus far! :)

The only thing I can think that LMP stands for is Last Menstrual Period. As far as doctors yelling, nurses being mean - stand up for yourself. You don't have to take it. I have found 99% of the doctors to be very polite & just recently had a run-in with a couple of not so nice nurses. Don't take their b.s.
