Watts or UNC

U.S.A. North Carolina

After careful consideration Ive decided between these two Nursing Programs. I havent applied to either college yet. Im a little concerned about acceptance into UNC because my high school grades were not at the top 50% of my class, but I do have all of the min. requirements (minus Algebra 2) hopefully my college transfer credit will make up for that?

Watts seems to have a great reputation too. Is there are really long waiting list for Watts?

I live 20 miles north of Raleigh so I would have quite a commute to either school, but it would be worth it in the end.

What do you all think? I would love to hear your suggestions

Hi Katesmom,

I'm new to the forums and to NC, and I've been doing my research into nursing schools out here also...I have narrowed my choices down to UNC and Watts as well. Both colleges have a truly great reputation, you really can't go wrong either way. UNC pretty much speaks for itself and everyone I've spoken with says Watts is a hard school, but you come out of there with some impressive clinical skills. I guess it depends on what your goals are -- as you know, you'll be working on your BSN straight away at UNC if the prereqs are all done whereas Watts is a two year diploma program (they work with Mt. Olive College, which grants an associates degree in Health Science to go with the nursing diploma).

Personally, I have started the application process at Watts because I'll be able to get in sooner...I wouldn't have all the prereqs done for at least another year at UNC, and I'd be able to start Watts after completing the 18 hour residency requirement (one semester) for Mt. Olive's AS degree. I figure I'll do my RN to BSN later on when my kids are a little older and I have more time and more money! Speaking of that, Watts is a little on the pricey side because its a private school, more than the community colleges, but a bit less than UNC because their cost includes books and most supplies. I don't know how hard it is to get into UNC or if they have a waiting list. As of right now, there isn't a waiting list at Watts. I'm supposed to take the entrance exam next month, I'm hoping for the best!! Feel free to PM me if you'd like more info on Watts and their admission process. I'm interested in knowing what you decide.

Good luck!

Candace
