We recently have been having some tension between some of the specialty teams in my OR. Three specialties are isolated from the remaining ones, and cover their own call. The remaining specialties pool call, and whoever's on call for the night does whatever rolls through the doors with the exception of those three specialties. The three specialties that cover their own call are maxed out- short staffed with no one applying for vacancies and averaging 40-80 hours of call per week vs. the other specialties' 10 hours of call per week. Recently, the other specialties were asked to assist with call coverage, which kind of set off a major uproar. Just wondering if this is common in other facilities and what has been done to combat it so that everyone works together as a team.

For those who have answered that the call team does whatever rolls through the doors, do all of your staff rotate through all specialties, including open heart?

CVOR is a separate entity from the main OR at my facility, so they have their own call. In the main OR we have 2 call teams - general call and liver call (which can be transplants, washouts, etc).
