Wanted RN .7, or .6, or .3

I am hoping since you are all new to the world of looking for a position you might be able to help me understand what these are. I don't graduate until December but have been looking through RN position postings and have found these .7, .9, .3, etc. next to the job postings. Does anyone know what these mean?

They have to do with "FTE" (full time employment). For example, if the hospital requires 80 hours a 2-week pay period to be full time, then 80 hours would equal 1.0. With 80 hours = 1.0, 0.7 would equal 56 hours per pay period-80 x .7- (28 hours a week), and so on. Sort of a specific way to advertise the exact hour requirements of the positions. The recruiter/interviewer at the VA was nice enough to explain that to me last week :).

Just to add with what has been said. Yes it is for a 2 week pay period. Each 0.1 equals 8 hours. So 0.7 x 8 = 56 hours/pay period, 0.6 x 8 = 48 hours/ pay period, and 0.3 = 24 hours/pay period.

It took me awhile to get used to this lingo, now I find myself talking to my non-nursing friends and saying, "Yeah, I accepted a .6 position..." and they look at me like I am speaking in a foreign language. :chuckle

Besides looking for positions that say "full-time" or "1.0" you might also want to check out "0.9" positions. Many hospitals consider this to be full time as far as most benefits go (health insurance, etc.) and you only have to work 3 12 hour shifts. But not every hospital honors this, so you'd have to ask.

I just put in my request to go from a 1.0 to a .9 (WOOHOO). It's only one day less a month but than one day is precious to me, my husband (who works three or four 12-hour shifts per week) and my kiddos, ages 6 and 9. And it will be a bit less money, since 8 of those 12 hours from that one shift were OT. But my peace of mind is priceless. I don't know how the travelers do it....they are all 1.2 employees.
