Waiting List

When I called the college that my daughter plans to attend, they told me #1) there is a waiting list, however it is not first come-first served. They do favor higher GPA's. 2) she has to take 3 general study classes before they will even consider (biology, A&P 1, psychology) ;and 3) there is a shortage not only of nurses, but nursing instructors. I was RECRUITED my alma mater to go through their BSN program because "there is a shortage of nursing instructors". They want us back for their BSN-MSN program so we will come teach!

Here is some food for thought! The average graduate can get 1 year of hospital experience and go traveling making >$75,000 a year (with an ASN)! The average nursing instructor has a MSN or PhD and makes $45,000-$60,000. Why bother? It is a viscious little food chain, and pretty soon the major link of instructor is going to be extinct, thus causing an even greater nursing shortage!

I was wondering what school you called. It sounds a lot like JSU, which is where I am at.

I do understand what you said about the instructor.

Also, wondering what do you think it would take to start reversing the shortage. I personally think "show me the money". WHen you think about what we as nurses hold in our hands compared to other perfessions that make so much more. Example, my brother works for a papermill with a high school education, he is working on a BS at the currect, but he makes around 45-48k. As a new grad I will make 30-35K.

I went to Wallace Community College in Dothan AL. That is also where my daughter is going.

I wish I had an answer to the shortage, however we seem to be so far behind the payscale in Alabama that more and more nurses are taking on traveling for the higher pay. I too am considering this. I also believe if we united (yes some type of union) in the South, we might see a turnabout. Unfortunately, the state nursing association tries to promote the "art" of nursing more than the financial aspect, hence why I am not a member of our state nurses association!

Until the public sees nursing as a profession, and not a glorified servitude position, the shortage will continue. There was a HUGE shortage when I graduated (OMG! 16 YEARS AGO), but it has continuously gotten worse. The pay has increased some, but not in proportion to the duties they keep "allowing" us to perform.

My thoughts exactly. As a matter of fact, I am in the RN-BSN-MSN program at JSU. I have an ADN now so all of my classes are online. One paper that I have due tomorrow is about the barriers to professionalism in nursing. I was watching tv the other day and saw something that infuriated me representing nursing. Totally misrepresented nursing all together. Not to mention in the past on one of the soap operas that an animal was dressed in a nurses outfit, the degrading of some of the characters playing nurses on tv, and other impressions made about nurses. No one will respect nurses for what they truly do until all the derrogatory images are gone.

Hello this is my 1st post!!! Anyone going to wallace state hanceville

I am in Rainsville, in N. Alabama. I am going to apply at Northeast (where I am currently attending), Calhoun (Decatur), JSU, Gadsden St., and I thought about Hanceville. I have to get in this year. I can't wait another year! I am hoping that if I don't get in at Northeast that I can carpool with some others. I have been told by other RN's that getting a CNA job or anything on the floor would be helpful, but finding a job in our small town might be a trick. Jobs are hard to find and I don't want to have to drive an hour or more just to make a little over min wage on a part time basis when I could be studying! Any advice would be great!!!
