Ventilators

My interview didnt require a single clinical question. However, I think as an ICU nurse you would need to know the difference between SIMV, AC, and CMV. That would be a good start to read up on. We use pretty much all CMV in the OR, SIMV and AC are used more for longer term ventilation.

I do not think you'll get this type of questions simply because you are not required to know that in depth. I am RRT/CCRN and just got in for Fall 2007. My interview consisted of some clinical questions but none of them were about vents.(that would be great for me!) I think if they ask you about vents simply say you do not have an answer at this time and would love to get back to them as soon as you learn about it. This is the reason why you are going back to school-to learn.

In any case here is simple explanation of three main modes of ventilation:

They are: A/C or CMV, SIMV,CPAP. All of them have two things incomon they all have set FiO2 and PEEP. Only SIMV and CPAP have Pressure support, and only AC and SIMV have set RR and Tidal Volume.

Pretty much AC only for pt. who can not maintain their RR and VT on their own,SIMV for those who are mostly chronic or getting close to be weaned off, and finaly CPAP just some PS no set VT no set RR, pt. must be able to maintain their own RR and VT with some PS.

I have reviewed frequently asked questions for interviews and since there seem to be a few RRTs on here maybe you will be of great assistance. Anyway, I was wondering what are considered the basics of vent settings what are we expected to know about ventilator settings inside and out for CRNA interviews. ( also those who have had interviews and have insight on this please feel free to respond as well).

Didn't have any qu about modes of vent, but they did ask...p02 50 what would you do? But, I think it's a good idea to know the vent settings you use in your ICU (SIMV, PSV, PRVC for me), abg's and how to fix them (fio2/peep..PS/rate)...etc. As it's been said here before, the more prepared you are going into the interview, the more confident you'll feel.
