Hello! VA nurse here. Just wondering if any VA's have offered any bonuses or premium pay due to being critically short staffed.

Audie Murphy VA in STX is doing a 10% retention incentive until our new pay scale gets approved.

Does your new pay scale equate to the 10%? We’re being offered 10% for now, temporarily with a 72/80 modified package. Except it comes with a 12 hour on call shift, at least once a pay period. Can be called in to any unit, not just ICU where the incentive is taking place. Management is trying to claim on call is the norm for non-VA hospitals in ICU… which is definitely not true.

Interesting. Areas of my VA were offered a 10% retention bonus if you agreed to not leave in a year, but I've heard from a few very credible sources that they were allowed to offer up to 50% but of course management chose the lowest amount. Also hearing the VA police got a 25% bonus which if true.....

It wouldn’t be surprising if they were authorized up to that amount… the 10% barely accounts for a market adjustment where I’m at. So it’s not much of an incentive to us at all.

My OPF file was updated 3/10/22 with a $3500 bonus none of my co-workers were told was coming. My SF 50 reads thats this is a Group Cash- 5 USC CH 45. Incentive reward for superior accomplishments. We also got an email stating we were getting a 8% pay raise in a few months. Did anyone else hear of a 8% pay increase at your VA's or is this just my VA?

Long story but our department was not included for a retention bonus (10%) so we wrote a letter to upper management and we were told nursing salaries and incentives were currently being evaluated for the whole hospital so maybe mine will be?

Hi.. everyone.

I am currently working at LAC USC, and received soft offer from VA greater LA. I love working at LAC USC but pay was not that good, yet I only live 10 minutes away. LAC USC offers annual increase for RN one per year 2%, I get 14 days holiday pay, 2 wks vacay (1-2 yr of service, county annual leaves different based ion year of service, 3wks for 5yr or more service, 4 wks for 13 yrs of service, and 5 wks for 20 yrs of service)  and 96 hr sick leaves. And County system pay is salary base not biweekly.

VA HR told me that VA offers 13 days holiday pay, 8hr annual leaves and 4 hr sick leaves per pay check. If I do my math, that equivalent to 5 weeks annual leaver and 104 sick leaves. I don’t have information on how often pay increase and % of increase. I wonder if someone from VA LA location can give that information.

VA soft offer is 10-20% more than what my current LAC USC salary. Plus 3 more weeks vacation. However I would have to commute 40minutes to an hours to VA compare to 10 mins drive from my home to LAC USC.

FYI I am Special Procedure RN work at GI Lab at LAC and getting VA specialty procedure area too. I don’t know how it is in VA in term of special clinic. I understand med surg in VA might not follow CA nurse to patient ratio. And I wonder if clinic RN will be deployed or float to med surg in the VA system? During Covid-19 first & 2nd surge county clinic RN was deployed to med surg.

Any advice will be appreciated, thank you in advance for all the response.

In my experience VA offers pay increases on a level/step scale with pay increase every other year. RNs in the VA get 5 weeks vacation and 2.5 weeks sick leave per year PLUS the 13 federal holidays! VA also has a nice retirement.

I work at the Atlanta VA hospital. We got the increase from the RAISE act last year. We have been receiving a retention incentive for almost 2 years now. It is renewed each October. For me it is about 450 dollars every two weeks. Are any other VA hospital employees receiving the retention incentive? Thanks
