VA Hiring process

Published

Hello nurses. I was wondering if anyone out there has advice on the VA hiring process? I filled out an application and received a NOR stating that my application was reviewed and forwarded to the hiring manager. That was on 2/1/2017. I have not heard anything back yet. I emailed the HR contact and was told that my application was sent to the "Service" and it was probably still with them. I was also told that the position had not been filled yet. I asked if interviews had been conducted and was told that not likely but HR is not always updated. My jobs status remains reviewed but no determination made yet. Should I just give up at this point. I applied for this position early January.

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

Give it at least 4 months. I wish I were joking!

Thank you for the honest response. It's already been almost two months. Two months to go! :roflmao:

Specializes in EMT, ER, Homehealth, OR.

It sounds like the open period ended around the end of January and nothing will be done until that point. Once it reaches the local VA it can take 1-2 months before the interview and a couple of months before you start. Frequently it will take 6 months or longer before you start; 4 months is about the quickest it will happen.

I applied for a position end of last year, before Christmas. Didn't hear anything until two weeks ago when I was called to see if I was interested in an interview---telephone 6-panel interview.

That evening, received a call with tentative offer. Last week my references were checked and I completed the background check. This week I am scheduled for my physical, labs, fingerprints, photo, etc.

I say tentative because nothing is for certain until you receive the official offer which will state your salary. Your salary is determined by a panel of RN's who look at your experience, educational level, etc.

It's moving a lot faster than the 4-6months I thought it would take

Be patient and keep applying if you see any other positions that might interest you!

Specializes in EMT, ER, Homehealth, OR.

I did my fingerprints, physical etc. in mid September but did not start until October 31st. It was the 3rd orientation offered after my official offer; since I was not working a 2 week notice was not a issue.

Hi. Thank you for your feedback. It seems like the government hiring process is completely different from the private sector! I found out last week that nursing positions are handled differently and you are at the mercy of the local VA. It seems that each local VA has a different process when selecting candidates for interviews.
