Using credentials outside of the traditional work place

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello,

I'm very interested in holistic nursing, prevention, and wellness. Not surprisingly, there are many avenues one could take professionally as a self employed nurse in these areas (i.e. wellness coach, yoga teacher, writer, personal trainer, etc.). My question is, when is it okay to include your RN credentials when presenting your services to the public as a self-employed individual? Is this something that has to be okayed with the Board of Nursing first or do you review your scope of practice and just make sure you are not working outside that scope? Are there any other rules/guidelines? Thank you, in advance!

Many nurses enter into independent practise. You will need to check with your BON because each one will have very specific written guidelines.

In addition, you can usually call or email a practise consultant at your BON to ask questions.

Thank you for the information, Joanna!

The issue of using your credentials is a completely separate issue from where and how you practice. Your educational and professional credentials are earned & you are entitled to use them in any circumstance. Physicians have no qualms about using "M.D." in all aspects of their life... it is the same for us.

Your BON can answer questions about scope of practice for you. I know several nurse entrepreneurs. One has made a fortune with her 'enema clinic' in FL.... srsly. Best of luck on your venture.
