Does anyone know of any current research about the use of Chloraprep in babies? We are looking for information to support our using it and what age boundaries we should put on it's use. If anyone uses it in their nicu, how do you use it? Any info you have would be great.

We just started using it in our PICU, but our NICU doesn't. Per our policy, I believe there's a 2 month age limit before it can be used. Since we don't really get NICU-sized babes on our unit, I'd imagine even those in-the-NICU-forever kids who've been there longer than 2 months would still fall below some sort of a size requirement to use it.

We switched completely to Chloraprep in our unit...All IV/Art line/PICC line/Umbilical line insertios, venipunctures are prepped with chloraprep regardless of the size of the baby. We use the Sepp ampules for the small procedures and the swabs for the UA/UVs. The only thing we don't use them for are neuro procedures such as LP's and shunt placements. The sites are swabbed in a basket-weave pattern for 30 sec and left to dry. No more Betadine!

We too use chloraprep for just about everything....we wipe off with sterile water preps after the procedure on the little ones. Sign up for Medscape and search on there for articles...that is where we got many of ours.
Thanks for the great info. I will try and look on Medscape. Does anyone us the wipes at all? Instead of alcohol?

We only use it on babies older than 2 months. Betadine and alcohol before that.
