30 unit option

As a new grad vn I have been weighing my options and would like an honest opinion regarding the ladder. Its so hard to get into an rn program at a communty college that I even considered going to a private school but they want $127, 000 for their 3yr BSN. Has any one been successful with the 30 unit option?

First one must find a school that offers this option, then one must successfully enter the program under this guideline. The majority, if not all, schools that offer the 30 unit option clearly state that only available seats after regular students are admitted, will go to 30 unit option students. This effectively keeps these students out, because no school has open seats after they admit all qualified regular program applicants. If you are interested, you need to contact the schools and find out if you can attend school under this option. Be aware, that a 30 unit option RN license is only accepted in the state of CA.

If you go back and search the site for posts/threads by a member named "Haunted", I believe, you can read of her story attempting to get another state to accept her 30 unit option RN license. If I recall, she was unsuccessful.

Thanks a lot for the information, however I don't plan on leaving California. How do employers view the 30 unit option if you're planning to continue to get your degree?

Generally, employers do not show interest in your education, only in the fact that you have a clear, unencumbered license and they also show great interest in your experience level.

Unemcumbered license? Not sure what the term means, please clarify!

  • Experts

An unencumbered license is clear of any disciplinary action by the state Board of Registered Nursing. The license has no restrictions against practice and is not in a probationary status.

Never say never. There are many new RNs in California who cannot find jobs locally, and are having to endorse their licenses into other states in order to secure employment in other parts of the country.

You might want the option of being able to transfer your license elsewhere if you cannot find a job in any part of California.
