Jun 24, 201313 yr I know it is still early, but thought it would be nice to start a new thread for the Fall 2013 ASN students on here. Which campus you will be attending and where you are commuting from? I will be at the Gainesville campus and live in Jasper.
Jun 30, 201313 yr I have a little time today - does anyone have any questions you'd like to ask to a student that just finished their first year?I know I had a ton of questions before starting my first year, and it was so amazing having someone to sort of guide me through some of the unknown, as I was a wreck worried about my first year.

What will orientation be like? Will we get our student id's? Have time to get out books and parking pass? Met our teachers?? What to expect the first week? I am going to the Cumming/Forsyth campus.
Jun 30, 201313 yr If you have the time, you should try to get up to Dahlonega on a different day than orientation to get your ID and parking pass, as the orientation starts at 8am. At orientation, you sit in the big auditorium and you are introduced to the first year teachers. It lasted all day and lunch was provided. I went and got my books after orientation but don't remember if there would be enough time to get your ID and parking pass.
Jun 30, 201313 yr Kmp5 is correct - I'd go to campus in advance one day and get your parking pass and student id out of the way. There won't be enough time orientation morning. Orientation day you will sit in the big auditorium and the instructors will all introduce themselves. It's all very exciting just knowing you're entering nursing school, although I wouldn't say I learned a lot that day. We were given our first assignment - an essay - and if they do it the same this year - if I were you I'd go ahead and write the essay over the weekend. It won't be due your first day back, but at least you won't need to waste any of your time on that essay once classes start. Lunch was provided - a box with a sandwich, chips, cookies, etc. At the end of the day we were required to stay for advisement. Which took forever - we were divided into groups for this - and then we were free to leave.
Jun 30, 201313 yr First week - be prepared for lab. At orientation you may be given your first lab sheet. It basically tells you the reading to have completed by your first lab. Be sure you do all the reading required on that page. You want to be prepared for each lab - as you will have pop quizzes - three total and who knows when you will have them.
Jun 30, 201313 yr Oh and you will also receive your calendar/syllabus. I would try to read your chapters ahead of time. For example of Mondays lecture is over chapters 3 and 7. Read them over the weekend before lecture. Not always something I stuck to, but it'll help you stay ahead.
Jun 30, 201313 yr So the labs days are split up on either Wed or Fri with the times being split as well? Is that the same for the Cumming location as well?I will take a day and go and get my parking pass, student id and books all in the same day. Does the book bundle come with everything we need or will we need additional stuff?
Jun 30, 201313 yr The book bundle should come with everything you need book wise. I didn't buy the bundle - I just bought my stuff online beforehand because I couldn't afford the expense all at one time. Lab days: You will be given your lab day and time at orientation. They will assign you to Wednesday or Friday and your time will be either 8-12 or 12-4. It will stay on that day the whole semester. You will be off the other day. So if your lab is on Wednesday you will be off on Friday. However, occasionally they will assign something on your day off - but not often no more than two times Now when clinicals start - in October your clinical day will stay the same but the time will change. You will probably show up around 6-6:30am and it will end by 3:30 (although I think it was 2:30 or 3:00).
Jun 30, 201313 yr For lab you will need a stethoscope, a blood pressure cuff, your lab coat, and a lab kit you will purchase from the book store.
Jun 30, 201313 yr The lab kit includes all the supplies you will need for check offs (like foley catheter, syringes, iv kit, etc) you will receive two of certain things so you can practice in class and at home with one and then save one for check offs.
