UMD FNP Fall 2010

Has anyone else out there applied for Maryland's FNP program, set to start in Fall 2010? I saw the BSN/CNL applicants have a thread, so I thought we should have one too!

I'm very curious as to when we'll be hearing back, my best guess is by April 1st, since Nov. 1st seemed like the contact date for last semester's applicants.

I'm also hoping someone (GreyLady, perhaps ) knows if they're planning on offering more classes at the Shade Grove campus - I'm coming from the DC area and it would be fantastic if I could take more of the core classes down here!

I am applying for the Fall FNP program. My background is acute care pediatrics/adolescent medicine. I decided to do FNP over PNP because I love adolscent pt's and a PNP can't see pt's over 18, alot of times adolescent pts can be up to 21. I also didn't want to limit myself only to peds.

I am excited,, and nervous as I wait for a response.

Ok so i am not the only one who was trying to gather information about this program. My background is adult critical care, but I have only been at it for about two years. Does anybody know any information on their selection process? Whenever I call I always get a different story.

Currently, some of the core masters' courses are offered at Shady Grove, although not all of them and not every semester. But you should not let that stop you. More and more classes are being offered on line or hybrid - half online and half in class. The graduate class schedule is planned in such a way that many classes are offered on the same day so that if you have to travel to Baltimore, you might only need to go there once per week. You should definitely attend a graduate open house - usually one in the spring and one in the fall, watch the website - and it would not hurt if you indicated,when you speak to the program directors, your wish for classes at Shady Grove. Apart from understanding that there is enough of a demand to justify establishing any graduate program here, appropriately prepared faculty must be hired or assigned and clinical sites must be contracted with. And then there is, of course, a fair amount of money that must be set aside to accomplish all of this. Not an easy thing to do in this economy and particularly in an era of budget cuts and, yes, the School of Nursing has had its share with more coming.

In the end, if this is really your dream, is geography enough to stop you? It is very real, I know, but is it enough?

Do you happen to know how many slots are alotted for the FNP program? And do you know the competitve GPA? Just trying to weigh ny chances of getting in ;-)

Have you guys heard back? I was wait-listed for the Fall and have been struggling all week with what to do. I am accepted into University of Alabama (online) but for Adult/Women's Health which is not really what I want. I am also accepted to JMU in VA but that is a huge commute and expensive (because it's out-of-state). Alabama starts on Monday and I am registered but as of right this minute I am planning to drop the courses and go to JMU. I would be thrilled to get into Maryland but am not holding my breath. I have found them very difficult to deal with and I would doubt there would be much movement that would move me up the list. I am curious to hear how the rest of you are doing and whether you got in!!

What did you end up deciding to do? I am in a similar situation this year and am trying to figure out if I should start another program or continue waiting. I am told that if I dont get in for the fall, my application will be reviewed again for the Spring. But I'm trying to figure out how likely it is that I will get in either. Were you ever admitted for the fall 2010 or spring 2011? Did you find out what number you were on the waitlist? If I knew that I was somewhere at the top, I would feel more comfortable with waiting.
