I worked on 4w and floated to 7w and 3ne. Most people are very nice and helpful. I would have stayed if they'd had openings on 5E

I have done most of my rotations there as a nursing student. I have had rotations on L&D, postpartum, 3E and 3W (peds), 3NE (med/surg), 5E (medical ICU), and I am currently on 5W (trauma ICU) doing my preceptorship for my last semester. I have also spent a day in the NICU, PICU, BMT unit, and a couple days in the ED. Generally, everyone is very friendly and very nice. I really enjoyed my ICU rotation there, they have some very good and experienced nurses. It is a teaching hospital, which some people find a benefit and others find annoying. Overall, its a good hospital and I have had good experiences on every floor that I have been on.

I've worked on/been to all of them. A big benefit is the 4:1 ratios. Also, the PCTs are smart and well trained. It's a great place to work-especially the ICUs. But the CVICU nurses can be a little territorial. Be prepared to have thick skin if you go there, and even thicker skin for the CT surgeons. I'd recommend UMC to anyone.

Is it true that the 4:1 ratio at UMC means that most units don't have CNA's or PCT's? I've been told that the RN's do 100% of the care. Something tells me that is urban legend that perhaps other hospitals float in order to diminish the aura of the 4:1 ratio?

I was put in touch today with my cousin's friend who is a student at U of A and she said that there are PCTs on Med/Surg, but for a 30 bed unit she's only seen 2 PCT on during the day, but Intermediate Care Med/Surg has 5 PCTs for their 30 bed unit (the ratio is still 4:1). She also said that the people there are nice. Everyone, thank you for your responses.
