Anyone applying to UIC's graduate entry program starting Jan. 2013? I've glanced at the threads from the past couple of year's and thought I'd start one for the next application cycle. I'm finishing up pre-reqs and taking the GRE in a month. Good luck to all who plan on applying!

Heyllo. I'm also considering applying to UIC's GEP program beginning in January of 2013. Now, I have to admit that I'm now slightly uneasy about applying to MSN programs [and other versions of it like the one at UIC] because after having spoken to a friend of mine who is currently a nurse, he told me that one thing to consider before applying is the fact that the AACN would like to transition MSN programs into Doctorate of Nursing programs by 2015. Having learned this, I'm wondering as to how beneficial it would be to apply for an MSN program now when the DNP may be possible within the next 4 years. I would hate to work hard only to find that as soon as we graduate, the next best thing is available. What do you think?

Wait...Is it even possible to get a DNP without being an RN or having a MSN first? If not, then my question is completely irrelevant. Haha.

I spoke with the admission director at Johns Hopkins about this very issue. According to her, she strongly believes this DNP program will not be an industry standard because it would take all 50 states to agree. In addition, if it was decided that DNP became the new standard instead of a MSN, we would be grandfathered in depending upon our entry date.

It is possible to get a DNP without having any experience because there are programs out there or universities will begin to rollout programs within the next year. One school that I know of is eliminating their Entry MSN program and turing it into an Entry DNP program.

I will be applying to the UIC GEP 2013. I also applied for Spring 2012 entry, was invited to interview, but denied admission. :-( Devastating. But I'm not a quitter. I love the structure of this program and will be resubmitting my application. Sending good luck to everyone preparing application materials, choosing recommenders, and registering for the GRE. I am likely going to apply (mental health specialty), but I'm not entirely sure it's the right decision. I already have a Master's degree (in psych) that I need to pay off, so taking on this much more debt is intimidating.

I'm also not sure how competitive my application will be because my GRE math score is low and I doubt I can bring it up THAT much. My undergrad gpa is ok, though (around a 3.6), and my graduate gpa is high (around a 3.8). I already took all the prereqs.

From what I've read about DNP, there is not a significant enough pay increase from an MSN to a DNP to make the debt worth it.

Any who, I am applying to the Midwifery/Women's Health track in January.

Your stats seem impressive. I am finishing my MA degree and currently have a 3.4 but will hopefully end around 3.6. My undergraduate was around the same. My pre-reqs gpa is a 3.8.

I, too, have heard this from UIC faculty. The DNP is no longer projected to be minimum education by 2015. My suggestion is that you go for M.S. (and I've been putting in my threads that you WILL be awarded an M.S. degree NOT an M.S.N.). You can always apply to the DNP during your MS program, should you find UIC to your liking. If not, why continue?

I am very excited for the possibilities that this program will present to my career path, though I am apprehensive to quit my job and potentially not work full time for over a year. However, UIC's program is probably the best in Chicago so I think it will (hopefully work out). Does anyone know anything regarding the average financial aid students receive in this program?

I'd love to know about the average financial aid as well. Since they don't want you to work (I don't know how I would), we'd pretty much have to live off it. Chicago is comparatively inexpensive for a city of its size, but it's not so cheap that you can live off a $2000 a semester student loan refund either.
