Tripler ?

We are also ex military and thinking about relocating to Hawaii, some of the wages were real low, $13-$14 an hour, but most seemed to be good, at least for LPN's. Can we trade information (I don't have any:rolleyes: , but what have you found out?)

Have been checking into relocating to Hawaii. Had lined up a job with a travel agency but felt the pay was too low. Will be going over with my kids and just myself (single mom). I am ex military so was thinking I would like to work at Tripler. Anybody out there know the best way to get a lead on a job there? Worried about the school situation. Is it as bad as I have been told?

Thanks for any info you can give. Also I have been hearing that Queens will give relocation benefits. Is that only for certain high demand jobs. I have worked almost every area in my 25 years but mainly stay in the pediatrics.

I Have been an OB nurse for my first year out of nursing school and now I have been offered a position at Tripler. It would be my first travel position. I am very nervous as my previous position was at a community hospital that took high-risk patients but send the REALLY high risk patients to boston. We only had a level I and II nursery, no NICU. Tripler does have a NICU and I really wonder if it would be too risky for a relatively new nurse to do a three month assignment there. Again, I have one year's experience in L&D and am a B.S.N. I worked hard to get my lisence and I don't want to put it in jeopardy! If anyone has worked there in L&D please let me know how safe the staffing is, how supportive the nurses are to travelers and new grads, etc.

Honestly I would not want to work at Tripler. There have been 2 tragedies that occured there. A couple of months ago, the OB nurses accidentally gave CO2 to a newborn for over an hour and the baby became retarded. The parents are involved in a multimillion dollar lawsuit. Also a couple of months ago, an error was made by an unidentified nurses that ended up killing a new mother after she gave birth. Tripler does not have a good reputation. A lot of new grads that I know refuse to take positions there even though the pay is really good

I think that school is what you make of it. I attended school in Hawaii and was accepted to several prestigious universities on academic scholarship. Currently my son is in a gifted and talented program and has scored in the superior range for National Assessment tests. Yes, teachers ALL OVER THE COUNTRY need to continue with CEU's and other training in order to provide the best learning experiences for our children. I am not denying that. But I also believe that it is the parents' responsibility, as well, to make sure that their children are recieving that quality education, and also acting as adjunct teaching staff at home, to continue the learning process.

My husband is from Texas and I have been there often. There are some schools there, and children, that desperately need to be saved. I believe that every school, just like every hospital, has their own horror stories. It is unfair to make generalizations and blanket statements about the state as a whole.

First of all the school system in hawaii is horrible...they really push traditional HI culture...and touch on things our children are use to and expect to know in stateside setting..... we were there for 2 yrs and my daughter learned the first yr more HI culture than i care to discuss...needless to say i sent her back to the states to live with her father best thing i did...Second I also work at Tripler it was okay but belive me you the pay is not all that great:uhoh3: I would really think about taking my children their to live their education is priceless..at any rate good luck with your decision.

I think that you should not be so quick to pass judgement on the school system in Hawaii when the grammar in your post leaves much to be desired. You might want to think about "spell check" prior to sending your posts. Also, if you did get a proper education, you would realize that your statement about sending your child back to the states is incorrect, as Hawaii IS A STATE. You made comments of this nature twice in your posting.

Loving mom, if you are deciding to relocate to Hawaii, you may contact me at any time. I will help you make the adjustments and find suitable schools for your children. I can also make some suggestions regarding housing, travel, sites and attractions, and anything else you can think of.

Don't let one person's experience ruin it for you. I believe that the attitude that a person carries with them will dictate the experiences they are likely to have.

Finally, if you decide to work for Tripler as an agency or travel nurse, you will get paid less than everyone else. It is common knowledge amongst Hawaii nurses that Tripler pays less. This is because they have binding fixed rates that are worked into their contracts. Agencies can not pay employees more because from a business standpoint, it is just impossible. However, if you decide to become a staff nurse there, the pay is pretty good as they add in a 25% cost of living allowance. The also have a child care co-op on site if you have small children.

I'm wondering if you can tell me a little bit more about tripler....I am a newley graduated nurse and just starting my commitment to the army and I have been assigned to tripler after basic training. All I know about tripler is what you can get off the website....which is really not too much. I'm a little nervous because I am new to the army, a new nurse, and have only lived in Montana (where I grew up) and Minnesota(where I went to school)....so needless to say things will be way different and I'm trying to prepare myself as much as possible. Thank you for the help.

Hi Lisa, I grew up in Montana too! I'll be applying to work at Tripler within the next 6 months or so as a civilian, however I do know at least one person who works there now. I'll drop an email and see what I can find out for you, or see if I can match the two of you up via email.
