Traveling to Dc

my first travel was a local assignment at georgetown university hospital. i worked in the OR but i think their need is high everywhere. i traveled cross country and most of the travelers in my orientation where with cross country or american mobile. i'd definitely go back. i also worked (as staff) at washington hospital center in the OR. that place is definitely different. when i started, i didn't think people were the friendliest- and still don't after having worked there for 2 years, but i believe they were were at least nice (decent) toward travelers. biggest difference, you can't live near washington hospital center (or probably wouldn't want to) but i think most agencies house people in northern virginia anyway.

I was a student at Georgetown University so I am familiar w/ the area. I am interested in going to DC but I am wary of using American Mobile or Cross Country since I have heard bad things about both of them. However, if I am ready tp go to Dc and they are the only ones w/ opportunities I will jum pn the bandwagon. Which company are you with? How was the housing in DC? Was it difficult obtaining your license?

i'm with cross country and i'm not really impressed with them, only i haven't gotten around to looking for a new agency. they aren't the only agencies that the hospitals are working with at all. the only two that come to mind are first assist and rn network right now. getting a license in dc is no different from endorsing anywhere else. you can go to the nursing board downtown and obtain a supervisory letter of practice and you can start working with that. i took the subsidy because i lived in arlington. the people i knew were housed at apartment complexes in alexandria and arlington, va which were pretty nice places. very safe.

Are the complexes near public transportation. I do not have a car,

most apartment complexes have free shuttles to the metro in alexandria if they aren't w/in walking distance. i'm pretty sure you'll be able to get to work as long as you're working a day or evening shift . i'm not sure when the shuttle from georgetown stops at night.

There are a lot of jobs in nearby Maryland. I was very well recieved there!!

Baltimore is but a few miles away (went out in the bay for the 4th fireworks...it was awesome), and the sam for DC..just hop the train and in a few min you are there as well. :wink2:

Thanks for your response. I am not opposed to going to MD but Baltimore is kind of far from DC. Bethesda or Silver Spring MD I prefer. Any thoughts on those places.

One is with CC and the other is with American Traveler (NOT associated with American Mobile). I'm with American Traveler and according to my friends, they are paying about $37/hr for NICU/PICU.

texastraveler-Univ. of Maryland and Johns Hopkins are your big choices in Baltimore. I did three months at Univ. of Md in there PICU/Stepdown. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought and I got floated a lot into the stepdown, which was not fun. I'm not sure about other units, so if you aren't in peds, you can try there. I've heard that Hopkins don't treat travelers well, in the PICU at least, so you can try there as well. Parking anywhere in Baltimore is a hassle so, use their transit system if you can. It's fairly reliable.

for those of you who have traveled to DC can you tell me what company you've used. I am looking to travel in July and I am not finding many openings in the DC area? If you've traveled there what hospitals did you work in?

I am at Washinton Hospital Center, I work on Medical Cardiology. I'm with Cirrus Medical Staffing. First, I had to take a pay cut just to get housing that I consider decent- I am not willing to live in an old sucky building on the 9th floor for 3 months. I am at the Reserve at Eisenhower in Alexandria- very nice. Not in walking distance to much- except the Metro. I know that American Mobile is used for the area- you will find that the "Big" companies can get you pretty much anywhere, but they pay somewhat lower. I found that American Traveler who I also have applied to has a contract with the hospital here in Alexandria and puts their travelers in a place called Post Pentagon Row- apartments. They are so cool- it is like a Sqare of Shopping and restaraunts with an outdoor ice skating rink in the center. The apartments are on top of the shops. there is underground parking and it is next to a VERY nice Shopping mall. 4 levels with Nordstrom and Macy's as the department stores. If I weren't already moved into my 4th floor apartment I would look into moving there. Probably very expensive, but if the company is footing the bill, I would go for it.
