Trauma Core Group

Hello All,

I am the Clinical educator for ER/Trauma services and the Burn Center at my hospital. There has been only one other educator in this position and she left in April when I took over. The ED has lost 5 senior staff members due to scheduling and staffing issues. With a decent amount of the trauma core group leaving or having left already, I need to retrain a new "Core group". We already send all staff to TNCC, ENPC and require CEN within 2 years of starting in the ED. They also, as new staff have to complete the PA trauma foundation 32 hour Trauma course.

What other classes or training have you used to train the Trauma Core group? Rotating the staff in and out of trauma hasn't worked due to a lack of proficiency. What suggestions can you give me for a Trauma Core curriculum? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

I think you need to work with the NM to resolve the issues that are causing staff to leave. Otherwise, you'll just have to keep replacing your core group.

Having 5 senior staffers leave should be a huge red flag.

Sorry, I do not have an answer to your question. I was just wondering what the 32 hour Trauma Course is all about. I just completed TNCC which was only two 8 hour sessions. Could you give me some info on that?

There is an ACLS course for Experienced Providers (EP). It is not offered in many places because it really is advanced and requires a medical director. I know of only two in the whole BIG state of Texas. We offer the course every six months and get MDs plus critical care nurses, including ED nurses. It ain't for sissys! But there is a lot of good info.

Another thing that has helped us to work CLOSELY with pre-hospital personnel. We provide space for paramedic/EMT training. They train MONTHLY and intensely. Our staff is allowed to attend the courses free, but there are no contact hours for anyone except EMT/paramedics. The interaction has benefited us all.
