Transition in Position

I work in MICU and have worked there for almost 5 years. I began 2 days after graduation and this is all I know. I enjoy the pace and intesity immensely.

I recently was approached (after voicing interest) by the SICU director that she would love to have me on board in her unit when I was ready to depart MICU.

Today there's a spot open and she called me personally to request me to transfer .

The thing is, I am VERY nervous. I have the 'change insecurity' and I am afraid once I get up there, the director and the nurses are going to think that I am an idiot! M/S ICU is what I know and I am just being insecure, I know.

I already know that I will take the position. And, I'm excited about the challenge that lies ahead....ok, now not sure what I am asking of you all...

Anyone have similar instance, and would you care to share? I would appreciate it very much....

I work in a mixed unit, medical and surgical ICU. I've found myself really liking the SICU pts. They can be quite interesting!

I think you will transition just fine. You've been doing this for 5 years??? I don't think you will have a problem at all. To boot, it's the same hospital.

I have worked with MICU, CICU and SICU patients and my favorite was the SICU patient. The great thing about SICU patients is they are really sick and high acuity for the first 24-48 hours and then they get better quickly. It is so satisfying and also interesting to get the various patients. I LOVED the open hearts (we recovered them straight from surgery). I bet you will love the new challenges and you sound like a very dedicated and hard worker. EVERYONE feels that way with new things. It is totally normal.....Good Luck:yelclap:

I have floated to all different ICU's in my hospital-neuro, cardiac, medical, cardiothoracic, surgical and burns. The fundamentals of ICU care are the same. I prefer surgical patients. Many of the trauma patients who make up the majority of our population are otherwise fairly healthy and have good rates of recovery.

Compared to MICU, there are more road trips and bedside procedures.The surgeons are different somehow than the medical docs, but I don't really know how to explain.

I have accepted the position and plan to begin in approx 1 month, after the directors talk and decide on a final date.
