Torn between 2 lovers

Hello there,

I need help with a decision. I am a new graduate nurse studying for the boards, yay, and I want to know what you think of applying to bond before actually passing the boards.

Second, while doing orientation in school, I realized I wanted to do either maternity or psych nursing. When I spoke of it, I got the do 2 years med/Surg before doing anything else because you get experience and can transfer out after to whatever you want to do.

I really don't think I have too much time to transfer around because this is my second career and I'm already 50 years old. Don't look it but my birth certificate says it. So, help please.

Hi there. Congratulations on your achievements thus far. Only one more hurdle to go, right?

I certainly hope that the employment situation in your area is kinder to newly licensed nurses so that you will have a chance to choose between the two clinical specialty areas that are highest on your wish list. In many areas of the country, there are so few jobs for them that newbies area jumping at any opportunities that arise.

Psych/Behavioral Health is a very specialized field, and unless you are working in Geri-Psych (where most patients also have underlying physical disease processes) I don't think that Med-Surg experience would add any value. OTOH, Med-Surg experience would be relevant to peri-natal nursing practice because it requires a similar skill set. Developing physical assessment skills, post-op care, wound care, managing IV administration, patient teaching, time management, etc.... are common to both areas.

Wishing you the best of luck for a successful launch of your nursing career.

Thanks HouTx,

That clarification makes sense. Well time will certainly tell where my skills will be used. Thanks again.
