To Baylor shift or not?

Hi Everyone,

I need some opinions! I started 2 weeks ago as a CNA (will start nursing school in the fall) at a nursing home, working 3-11pm Fri/Sat/Sun. The 24 hours/week qualifies for benefits and earned vacation and sick time. They called today to offer me a position on the weekend baylor. 7p-7a Sat/Sun. I would work 24 hours and get paid for 36 hours. I could keep working friday 3-11 if I choose, for a total of 46 paid hours weekly. The biggest issue is no benefits on the baylor (I don't really need them) and no earned vacation or sick time.

So I'd like to hear from some of you that work this shift. Whether or not you like it and how you manage with no paid time off.

BTW, I LOVE working as a CNA for now!!!!!

I think its a great shift. Take the money and run. Downside: it will play havoc with your married life. So be prepared. They use it to cover their weekends.

I'm not following your math -- if you work 7a-7p Sat & Sun, and 3-11 on Fri, wouldn't that make 44 paid hours/week, not 46? :)

I worked a modified Baylor schedule years ago because I really wanted to specialize in child/adol psych and the hospital was ~2 hours from my home. I originally worked 3-11 on Friday, and 11a-11p Sat & Sun (evening shift was when they needed the coverage). The hospital was having such trouble covering days on the weekends that I eventually proposed that I work two doubles, 7a-11p on Sat & Sun. Like you, I needed the extra hours to qualify for benefits (esp. health insurance!) -- I worked 32 hours/week, got paid for 40 + full benefits.

It worked out great -- the two days were long, but they were my only work. I had Mon - Fri of every week completely free! I rented a room and stayed over in town on Sat nights, so I didn't have to drive all that way back and forth; just one round-trip each weekend. I used my free time during the week to complete a BSN (old diploma grad here :) )

Esp. if you don't have family responsibilities on the weekends, take the money and run! :chuckle
