Time frame for relocation

Published

Hello, NC nurses

I wanted to relocate to the Raleigh area in late May early June when my kids are out from school here in Delaware. Should I start applying for jobs now? I have been on several hospital sites and I seen a few opportunities I would like to apply for but if I get called for an interview now would I look crazy if I could not start until June?

Any advice would be helpful

I'm not in NC, but I would suggest that you never apply for a job that you can't start within 30 days or less, so wait until about April to begin sending resumes. Hiring managers and HR people work to very short time frames but have long memories. If you apply now, go through a series of interviews and other pre-employment processes only to turn down an offer because you are not ready to relocate you run the risk of turning them off to you in the future. You should also state clearly in a cover email and/or in the "Objective" section of your resume that you are relocating to the greater Raleigh-Durham area in June 2014. This will leave little doubt that you are serious about that area in particular and not just randomly "shotgunning" resumes all over the country. Good luck with your move!

I relocated last year, started as a traveler when I first got here. I had applied for a permanant position to one hospital and they finally called me six months later. They are VERY slow around here for hiring. Especially Duke. Up to you, but I don't think it's too early to start applying.

Similar situation. We are wanting to relocate after the kids finish school at the end of May. I should have my NC license by the end of February(mailed in the background check form and fingerprints this weekend)...but I refuse to move without a job. I will also have almost a year of L&D experience by then also.

I am already here relocated approx 2 wks ago plan to start working in March, I'm strongly considering a travel position to feel out the hospitals in the area being that I don't know anyone, so no input on the hospitals.

Great advice, I will include this in my cover letter.

Thanks

I have thought about travel assignments as well, if you have an agency you could recommend that would be great. Thanks

UNC has amazing benefits across the board and pay is better than any other system in NC that I've been able to research or interview with. Duke has comparable benefits, but UNC is definitely the best. Also, know that both systems have very slow HR departments. I would start applying 2-4 weeks before you move. It takes at least 2-4 weeks for your app to be forwarded to managers and then have an interview set up.

Oh! Also, UNC offers up to $2500 for relocation if you are over 50 miles away. I believe Duke offers something similar as well. So, if you could get. Job interview before you move (video interview perhaps?) and are offered a position before moving, they would be able to help with your move, which is an added bonus :)

Thanks for the information. I applied everywhere and UNC called first, I travel out to interview and tour the area. (Costly but worth it in th ened) Unfortunately it was during the snow storm so my interview was rescheduled until the next day. Interview went well and I accepted an offer, I start in May. This is truely a blessing, I really wanted Duke but sometime you get what you need and not what you want. Other health systems was giving me the run around, but with UNC from recruiter to manager to interview was a smooth transition. Wakemed wanted me to be licensed in NC already, Duke scheduled a phone interview cancelled one, on the day of and on the rescheduled day they forgot to call but I called them, completed the interview and the only follow up email states we will let you know of the next step.

So I will start my new career at UNC, rotating shifts may be a lil hard in the beginning and it took me 15 mins to walk from parking garage for the interview and another 10 minutes to find my car when I returned. It's a beautiful campus and I see a great potential to grow my nursing career with UNC.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and comments
