Thinking outside the box

Nurses Disabilities

Published

I began my nursing career as an LVN. Quickly transitioned to an RN with my ADN. I have worked with sped in schools, as a school nurse and as a nurse in an outpatient psych. I have always had a slight issue with a tremor that I was able to compensate for. However this neurological condition is degenerative and I must face the reality that I may not always be able to safely use nursing skills at some point.

I really like psych. I am thinking my choices now would be to pursue my bachelors in psych and start working toward a career that will not require me to use my nursing skills. Case work. Social work. Drug counseling. Even some kind of medical coding? Any suggestions? Thoughts? Anyone taken this path through health care?

Thank you for any positive suggestions. :))

We need to know more. The worst case scenario is mild to moderate hand tremors....or more severe progressive total body weakness?

Hopefully your neurologist is a good, therapeutic listener and resource for your questions. Or find a support group with people with a similar diagnosis.

I’m right there with you. I have Essential tremors it is a de-myelination process. I have been taking Primidone for many years. I’m to the point where I either need to change medicine or increase my dose. It just makes me so sleepy during the day, sometimes I can’t even function.
I’m trying to transition into care management or patient advocacy. That way I can use voice to text.

I don’t have the money to go back to school, so I’m going with years of experience to help with the transition.

FYI: I have been actively trying for 15 months with no luck
